New JSTOR program: Register & Read

JSTOR has a relatively new beta program Register & Read. It allows online access ( to certain journals) to anyone who registers for a MYJSTOR account. I don't know if it expanded our subscription base or not, but it is a new interface/tool with which we should become familiar.

  • Log in to jstor.org and start searching.
  • Look for “Read Online Free” above the article and click on it.
  • Add the article to your “reading shelf” to read the full text.
  • Save up to 3 articles on your shelf at a given time. After 14 days, you can remove articles and replace them with new ones.

The journal AGNI has a number of "Read Online Free" articles available if you are curious about working with the new tool.  For more info about Register & Read: http://about.jstor.org/individuals-faq

Dell Vostro 1700 laptops upgraded to Windows 7

The Dell Vostro 1700 laptops which patrons check out at the Circ Desk have been upgraded to Windows 7. (These are the black laptops with webcams and large screens.) The Vostro 1700 in the Media Creation Room also has been upgraded to Windows 7. I've left off of this laptop some obsolete multimedia software (e.g., Animationish, Audacity, etc.) that received little or no usage from our patrons.

The smaller, newer Dell Latitude 5510 laptops will be upgraded to Windows 7 over the next week.

AccessPharmacy and AccessMedicine: Students Unable to Access Full Sites

Students have been reporting that they're unable to access the full websites of AccessPharmacy and AccessMedicine. Instead, they report seeing only samples of the sites' content. This glitch is caused by both of the databases changing their URLs on January 8th.

Here's the solution: The patron needs to empty his/her browser's cache. You can refer them to this how-to page for instructions: http://kb.iu.edu/data/ahic.html.

I've posted this information on our pages for pharmacy and nursing, and to the library's Facebook page.

Email about cheating and plagiarism

Monday an email was sent to the students of the School of Business and Technology about cheating and plagiarism.  The email lists examples of each category.  Among them is the use of "unauthorized" sources or help when doing school work.  I am mentioning this so that everyone will be aware of the email.

Microform reader/printers: Viewing, but no printing

Due to hardware problems, it's currently not possible to print from either of the microform reader/printers. The newer of the two machines is out of service due to a burned-out bulb. Microforms can be viewed on the older machine, but the older machine cannot print.
