When you replace a toner cartridge in the HP color laser printer at the Reference Desk, please recycle the empty cartridge.
Genuine HP toner cartridges in the blue and white boxes come with a prepaid return shipping label in the box. Seal the box (read the instructions on the box -- no tape required), stick on the shipping label, and put the box in the outgoing mail.
The Premier toner cartridges for the HP color laser can also be recycled. Tape the box shut, print a return label (see below), and tape the label to the top of the box. There's packing tape by the fax machine in the break area.
For your convenience, I've created a shipping label and put it in the My Documents folder. Look for the file called "toner-cartridge-return-shipping-label.docx." If you can't locate the file, here's the return address to use:
Cartridge Return Center
315 Weakley Road
Calexico, CA 92231-9953
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Jon W.
P.S. The Kyocera toner cartridges for the public printer aren't made to be recycled. Put the empty Kyocera cartridges in the trash barrel outside the janitor's storage closet.
[Update 11/5/09]
If a Genuine HP blue box doesn't have a pre-paid shipping label inside, follow the instructions above for sending the used cartridge to the Cartridge Return Center address.
