Reminder: Text A Librarian Time Settings

Each login for Text A Librarian must change their time settings individually. Go to the Settings link at the top of the page and click "Time Zone." Select Central Time (US & Canada). The default setting is for the International Date Line, which is several hours off.

Psychology Assignment

Many of our students are working on an assignment for Dr. Edwards' psychology class. The students are to use journals from our periodical holdings, and they may need some help with preparing APA citations for the articles they use. A copy of the assignment is on top of the file cabinet here at the desk.

The Statesman's Yearbook

With the purchase of The Statesman's Yearbook, we have also received a subscription to Statesman's Yearbook Online. If you link to the site, you will find you have complete access to the resource. Take a look and see what you think.

Text a Librarian

We will begin using Text a Librarian (TaL) as part of our Ask a Librarian services when we enter the fall semester. I have placed a copy of the Quick Start Guide and a copy of Chat/Texting Abbreviations in the flip file on the Reference Desk. The guide is a quick read. In fact, I have highlighted some of the significant parts of the program for easy access. I believe almost everyone who works at the desk has been through some level of training for use of the microboard. If you have any questions or need help, please let me know so that we can make this service easy to use.

In case you have forgotten your username, I have a list at my desk. The password will be added to the Password page in the flip file.

Jon W. is working on changes to the Ask a Librarian page with an addition of a Text a Librarian page, and Jason is working on promotional materials. The plan is to promote/unveil the service at the SGA Organizational Fair on Thursday, August 20.

Band Camp Kids

We've had several issues this past week with the band camp kids. If you see band camp kids in the library, you are asked to remove them from the building.

See the camp director's response:

I'm sorry that we had disruptive band students in the library. We will take care of the situation. The band camp students don't have any reason to be in the library, so if any more wander in, you can ask them to leave. Thank you for getting the names of some of the disruptive students. We will make contact with them.

I apologize for the disturbances. I will get word around that none of the campers should be in the library building. Thank you for letting me know of the problem and we will address it with the students.

Kraus Curriculum Development Library Update

The 28th Edition of the Kraus Curriculum Development Library is now available online at KCDLonline.com. With 435 new documents, the KCDL database now contains over 7,500 curricula, frameworks, and standards from 1983 through 2009. In total, there are now almost 4,000 records with full-text documents.

We are excited to announce some changes to KCDLonline which we hope will improve our database. Based on replies to our recent user survey we have decided to make the following changes:

1. The print Index to the current year’s edition has been discontinued. We are creating the yearly Shelf List, but no longer posting it online. The Shelf List for the 28th Edition is available by request. Please contact us at info@kcdlonline.com and we will forward you a PDF copy for your collection.
2. We have reversed the order of the Search screens, so that the Advanced Search screen is above the Keyword Search.
3. We have added a “Tips and Tutorials” tab which includes our own PowerPoint presentation, as well as user-created posters, lessons, and usage tips. (You are more than welcome to share materials you have created with us).
   
   

We will begin to add new titles for the 29th Edition this August and will continue to update KCDLonline’s links monthly.

MICROMEDEX Now Available on the Pharmacy Page

MICROMEDEX is now available on the library’s Pharmacy Resources page. MICROMEDEX was previously only available in the College of Pharmacy’s computer lab.

The database provides rapid access to information on drugs, diseases, acute care, toxicology, alternative medicines, and patient education.

SWOSU’s subscription to MICROMEDEX comes through the College of Pharmacy. CoP’s subscription agreement with MICROMEDEX’s publisher requires that we restrict MICROMEDEX access to SWOSU students and employees – in other words, no use by the general public. This means that patrons must login to MICROMEDEX through EZproxy with their SWOSU student email or employee ID whether they’re using MICROMEDEX from an on-campus or an off-campus computer.

Public printer memory upgraded

On Tuesday night I upgraded the memory in the Kyocera public printer from the factory default 128MB to 640MB. The extra RAM will help the printer process print jobs more quickly, especially large PDFs and PowerPoints.

Using Meebo

I received my first IM of the semester today. I happened to see the pop up, but I did not hear a notification signal. It appears that we have been missing some messages--none have been recorded on the statistics sheet for the entire semester.

Please be sure that the volume on the speakers is turned on and is pretty high. We don't want to miss any activity that makes our desk duty more interesting.
